Technology Divide

I am placed in the Lowell School district right now. When I was there this week I became curious about the number of computer the school has. The elementary school I am in has more than 120 computers for just student use. Then they also have a computer cart with fifteen brand new laptops on that. Each classroom has a projector that is linked to the Teacher's computer and a DVD player. Most of this technology was donated by Amway according the the tec lady. There are more than 3000 computers in the school district. I was amazed! How do you get companies to donate technology to the school? Does anyone out there have any answers? I have heard of getting technology grants but never them being donated brand new from a company.

  1. Wow!! That is awesome that their school received all those computers. I think that local businesses can be asked to donate things that school may need. I not sure about what all goes into getting donations but I am thinking that is something that the board of directors takes care of.

  2. That is very surprising! I think it is very important for all classrooms to have computers. I was walking in a school that I was placed in and saw a classroom using brand new MacBook laptops! I was surprised that the school had money for this. Then I figured they were donated or had some sort of grant they received. I would assume a teacher would write to a company and explain their situation and ask them if they could help out the school and one way would be to donate.

  3. This is an amazing donation that was made to the Lowell School District! I was wondering how your teacher utilizes this abundant technological resource? I know some teachers that have abundant resources that they don't utilize. I also wonder why Amway donated this brand new equipment? I know that Lansing school district, where I am placed, could definitely use some updated technology. I hope that more companies will donate technology to schools that could really use it because that may be the only way that they acquire any new technology.

  4. You said that the tech. woman stated there are 3000 computers in the district. Yes this seems like a lot to me but I have a few questions regarding this statistic. First being how many of them are for direct student use? If there are 500 of them are only for staff then it really defeats the purpose does it not? Second, how many students are in the district? Is 3000 an ample number related to the amount of students they have? And finally, how are they utilized and what can be done to improve their utilization? I often find that many times schools have so many computers but they are rarely used to their full potential. It is great that this company did this, but what else can be done?!?!
